DAVID LETTERMAN GAVE CONAN O’BRIEN A HORSE NAMED ‘DAVE’ TO THANK HIM FOR HIS TRIBUTE
In 2015, David Letterman was preparing himself for retirement after 33 years of honourable service behind a late-night show desk, a type of communication work he was a pioneer of, as well as its greatest exponent, probably. Right about that time, Conan O’Brien was asked if he wanted to pen a tribute to his long time mentor and inspiration; a tribute to be published on Entertainment Weekly moments before David Letterman’s last rodeo on the Late Night Show with David Letterman.
And it wasn’t only the readers who found themselves moved by what Conan had written, but Dave found it sweet and moving himself. This is what Conan told Stephen Colbert, last Friday night, along with telling the story of the gift that David sent him to thank him for his kind words. O’Brien revealed that when he saw the massive truck struggling to get through the gate, he thought Letterman had given him a vintage Porsche, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, the gift was… a horse.
“Take a look at my facial expression” Conan said to Colbert as he was telling the story, “that is the face of a man who has no idea of what to do with a horse. On top of that, I found out that you have to board them, feed them, treat them humanely… Oh, and guess what the horse’s name is? It’s called Dave”.
Conan kept the horse for two years, until they told him it was a horse too crazy to be mounted regularly, so Conan’s wife finally found a solution: they donated the horse to a top tier equine massage center, where he lives freely with other horses in an open space, being brought in only to be massaged by veterinary students.
